Can ChatGPT or Google's AI Book Your Vacation Rental? Where It Stands in October 2026
AI answers now help guests choose where to stay. Booking still happens on a platform or a host's own site. Here is what the companies' own pages say, as of Oct 29, 2026.

Short answer, as of Oct 29, 2026: no mainstream AI assistant books a vacation rental for a guest on its own. Google's AI Mode books hotels through named partners. ChatGPT recommends places and hands the purchase to a partner's site or app. Guests who find you through AI still book on a platform or on your own website.
This page is part of our Direct bookings hub. Things are moving fast, so every statement below is dated and tied to the company's own page where one exists.
Can ChatGPT book an Airbnb today?
Not on its own. As of Oct 29, 2026, OpenAI's own pages describe ChatGPT as a place to discover and compare, with the purchase finishing on the merchant's site or app. Airbnb's terms don't name AI agents. They do bar bots and other automated means from interacting with its platform, and Airbnb hasn't said whether that covers an AI agent booking for a guest.
Here is what OpenAI's pages say:
- Apps in ChatGPT. OpenAI launched apps on Oct 6, 2025. Its launch post lists the pilot partners as "Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify and Zillow" (OpenAI, accessed Oct 29, 2026). Airbnb isn't on that list.
- Checkout. OpenAI's merchant page says: "We're moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience in ChatGPT and prioritizing better shopping discovery and merchant-owned checkout experiences. Users can discover and evaluate products in ChatGPT, but purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps." (ChatGPT merchants, accessed Oct 29, 2026). That page is about products. It doesn't mention lodging.
- Hotels. OpenAI's Oct 7, 2026 customer story says the Radisson Hotels plugin lets users compare hotels in ChatGPT, "then continue to the Radisson site to complete their booking" (OpenAI, accessed Oct 29, 2026). That is a hotel chain, not a vacation rental.
We found no OpenAI page that describes booking a vacation rental, or an Airbnb listing, inside ChatGPT.

Can Google's AI Mode book a vacation rental?
Not according to Google's announcement. Google's Aug 27, 2026 post says it is "introducing hotel booking through AI Mode in Search," and it doesn't mention vacation rentals.
Google says hotel booking in AI Mode "has started rolling out in the U.S. in English" with these partners: "Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts." It also says that when you book, "the hotel or booking platform will act as the merchant of record and handle any customer service" (Google, accessed Oct 29, 2026).
Vacation rentals sit in a different Google product. Google's Hotel Center help says you can list vacation rentals on Google if you are "a registered property management business with a direct booking website" or "already listed on a booking site that's integrated with vacation rentals on Google," and that "shared rooms, partial houses, and peer-to-peer rentals aren't currently eligible for integration" (Google Hotel Center Help, accessed Oct 29, 2026).
MyRent, a property management software company, reported on Oct 13, 2026 that "Google Hotels and Google Vacation Rentals are separate product categories" and that a holiday apartment in Google results "does not automatically qualify for AI hotel checkout" (MyRent). That is MyRent's reading, not Google's.
What do Airbnb and Vrbo say about AI agents booking?
Airbnb's terms bar bots and automated access but don't name AI agents. Vrbo's new host terms, effective Oct 29, 2026, explicitly let Vrbo's group distribute your listing through "AI-enabled agent" channels.
Airbnb. Section 11.1 of Airbnb's Terms of Service says: "Do not use bots, crawlers, scrapers, or other automated means to access or collect data or other content from or otherwise interact with the Airbnb Platform." (Airbnb Terms, accessed Oct 29, 2026). We searched the terms for "AI agent" and found no match. We also found no Airbnb help page that addresses AI agents booking stays. Airbnb hasn't said in its own pages whether an outside AI agent may book for a guest.
Nikkei reported on Oct 3, 2026 that Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said Airbnb is unlikely to allow outside AI agents such as Meta's Muse to book stays for users (Nikkei Asia). That is an interview, as reported by Nikkei, not an Airbnb policy page.
Vrbo. Vrbo's Host Terms of Service, which show "Effective From: 29 October 2026," say in Section 15.1 that Vrbo's "Group of Companies may provide, transmit, sublicense, syndicate, copy, display, process, or otherwise make available your Listing, Content, Host Ancillaries, availability, rates, fees, taxes, policies, booking conditions, and related information through any third party website, application, API, data feed, platform, distribution channel, AI-enabled agent, assistant, automated service, metasearch service, or other online or offline channel." It adds: "Additional terms and conditions may apply to such distributions, as we may notify you via the Dashboard or email." (Vrbo Host Terms, accessed Oct 29, 2026).
Section 4.4 says listings may be "made searchable, made bookable or otherwise made available" through channels including "AI-enabled agents, assistants, automated services" with which Vrbo's group "has arrangements, to the extent we determine such distribution is appropriate." Section 5.5 covers use of host content on "AI-powered surfaces, automated agents."
What the clause does: it gives Vrbo's group permission to send your listing data to AI agents and assistants. What it doesn't do: it doesn't name any AI company, doesn't say any AI assistant can book Vrbo stays today, and doesn't say what the "additional terms" would be. Skift first reported the AI-agent distribution clause on Sept 29, 2026. The quotes above come from Vrbo's own terms. Vrbo's new terms also change fees and direct-booking rules; see our Vrbo 12% commission guide.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Read the full terms yourself.
Where do AI answers send guests: the platform or your own site?
Both, and it depends on what the AI can find. The companies' own pages show the booking finishing with a partner, a platform, or a merchant's own site, not inside the AI.
Google says the hotel or booking platform is the merchant of record. OpenAI says purchases "are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps." In OpenAI's Radisson story, the plugin's job is to send travelers to Radisson's own booking channel.
For vacation rentals specifically, there is one public test worth knowing about. Plate Lunch Collective, an AI search agency, reported that in 108 ChatGPT answers about where to stay on Maui on Oct 19, 2026, ChatGPT named a place 327 times, and only 10 of those names were individual vacation rentals (Plate Lunch Collective, Oct 20, 2026). It also reported that 7 of those 10 came from two questions, one about wheelchair access and one about pets. It is one island, one day, logged-out sessions, and the study says it had no booking data.

What can a host do now?
Make your listing and your own booking site easy for people and machines to read. None of this guarantees an AI will name you, but it removes reasons not to.
- State the facts plainly. Bedrooms, beds, baths, sleeps, parking, pets, accessibility, check-in time, minimum stay, cancellation policy and total price before checkout. Put them in text, not only in photos.
- Say what makes your place specific. In the Maui test, the individual rentals that got named mostly answered specific needs (accessibility, pets). If you have one, say it in words.
- Use one name everywhere. Same property name, address format and description on your site, your Google presence and your listings, so a search for your name finds one consistent place.
- Add an FAQ page and structured data. Answer the questions guests ask, and mark up your site with schema (for example FAQPage and a lodging type) so the facts are machine-readable. Our Lodgify SEO checklist and Hospitable Direct SEO guide cover the basics.
- Check Google Vacation Rentals eligibility. Google's own rules above decide who can list. If you qualify, your booking software may offer the connection.
- Ask the AI yourself. Ask ChatGPT and Google the question your guests ask, a few times. Note whether you appear, and where the link goes.
- Keep platform rules in mind. Don't use Airbnb or Vrbo to steer their guests to your site. Read our Direct bookings hub for the rules.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT book an Airbnb?
Not on its own, based on what Airbnb, Google and OpenAI have published. Airbnb's Terms of Service say: "Do not use bots, crawlers, scrapers, or other automated means to access or collect data or other content from or otherwise interact with the Airbnb Platform." The terms don't name AI agents. Google's AI Mode books hotels through partners such as Booking.com, Expedia and Marriott, and its Aug 27, 2026 announcement doesn't mention vacation rentals. OpenAI's Oct 6, 2025 apps launch named Booking.com and Expedia, not Airbnb, and we found no Airbnb ChatGPT app in the sources checked Oct 29. ChatGPT can still recommend places to stay, though one Maui test found it named few individual rentals. Recommending isn't booking.
Can Google's AI Mode book a vacation rental?
Google's Aug 27, 2026 announcement covers hotel booking only, through ten named partners in the U.S., and doesn't mention vacation rentals. Vacation rentals are listed through a separate Google program with its own eligibility rules.
Does Vrbo let AI agents show or book my listing?
Vrbo's host terms effective Oct 29, 2026 let its group distribute your listing, rates and policies through channels including "AI-enabled agent" and "assistant" channels. The terms don't name any AI company or say any assistant books Vrbo stays today.
Has Airbnb said whether AI agents can book stays?
Not in its own policy pages, as of Oct 29, 2026. Its terms bar bots and automated means but don't name AI agents, and Airbnb hasn't said whether they cover an AI agent booking for a guest. Nikkei reported on Oct 3, 2026 that CEO Brian Chesky said Airbnb is unlikely to let outside agents like Meta's Muse book.
Where do guests book after an AI recommends a rental?
On a platform, a booking partner, or the host's own site. Google and OpenAI both describe the booking or purchase finishing with the partner or merchant, not inside the AI.
What should I fix first so AI tools understand my rental?
Put the core facts in plain text, use one consistent property name everywhere, and add an FAQ with structured data to your own site. Then ask ChatGPT and Google your guests' questions and see what comes back.
